Lighter cleavers are easier to control and are well suited for smaller volume or less frequent processing. Cleavers sold by weight are always meat cleavers, and that weight reflects how much force the blade can deliver. A 1 lb cleaver is the lightest option that can reliably process meat and is typically preferred for home use because it offers greater control. 1.5 lb cleavers provide more power while remaining manageable, making them a practical middle ground for both home and light commercial use. As weight increases to 2–3 lbs, cleavers become more effective at breaking down large cuts and dense joints, but they require more strength and precise handling. At the upper end, 4 lb cleavers are built for heavy-duty processing, and anything larger is generally classified as a splitter.
