The Idahone 10-inch Ceramic Rod (including models R-10B, R-10L, R-12B, and R-12L) is manufactured to an ANSI 1200 grit specification. In the JIS system used for Japanese waterstones, this is equivalent to roughly 3000 to 4000 grit, making it an ideal tool for professional-grade maintenance and fine edge refinement. However, because a ceramic rod is a "hard" medium (it doesn't slurry like a waterstone), it performs more like a JIS 3000 in terms of the "tooth" or "bite" it leaves on a kitchen knife.
