An oil stone is used for sharpening and honing the edges of cutting tools such as knives, scissors, and chisels. It is typically a flat, abrasive stone that, when lubricated with oil, allows for smooth sharpening by reducing friction and removing metal particles efficiently. The oil also helps to prevent the stone from clogging, maintaining its effectiveness over time. Oil stones do not need to be flattened which is unique; waterstone and ceramic stones do need to be flattened after use.
