You're correct that they don't list honing rods by grit. These are textured rods with no striations (horizontal lines) that abrade metal similar to a ceramic sharpening rod as opposed to just realigning the edge. These high rockwell hardness powdered steel knife edges don't roll over like softer steel, but they do eventually dull. The Miyabi Birchwood rods are coated to achieve a rockwell hardness greater than the knife blade, and it should be used in the same manner as a diamond or ceramic honing rod. Not to suggest that it is as coarse as a diamond rod, but meaning that you would use this in lieu of a sharpening stone to remove a small amount of metal and refresh the edge.
