The Victorinox 10 in. Round Polish steel does not require sanding. In some packing house it is common to smooth a honing rod with fine emery cloth prior to use. This would be for a couple of reasons, none of which are applicable to a polishing rod. Sanding is done to create a finer surface. i.e. smoothing a regular cut rod. It can also be to remove dings that may have occurred by dropping or banging the rod on a hard metal surface. On the polishing rod, the only reason to sand would be to achieve a coarser texture, which would be uncommon.
