Thank you for your question about the Shun Kanso Tagayasan Wood Handles. As a woodworker, we call this wenge wood. Very hard and yes, it's real wood. For knife handles this is pressure treated with polyurethane which makes it highly resistant to moisture. Still, it should not be soaked for long periods of time or run through a dishwasher, but this makes an extremely durable handle.
