The serrated tips of the Messermeister steak knives would require specialized equipment to re-sharpen. However, the reason for choosing a serrated tip is because they will cut for much longer than a fine edge without any sharpening requirement. The serrations are cut on one side of the blade and eventually the edge will dull, at which point stropping will improve the performance. This can be done on leather or a thick section of newspaper. You would strop the back side of the knife in one direction with the goal of pulling the teeth so that they stand straight again. Should they require more than just a strop, a professional sharpener will have various techniques for renewing the edge. A popular method is to use an extra-fine metal conditioning belt, which is similar to a 3M scrub pad in texture. These have the ability to catch needle serrations and recreate factory edge performance.
